Pineapple Matcha Smoothie

With St. Patrick’s Day coming up this weekend, I figure there’s no better time than now to share a fun little green smoothie recipe with you! Something I love about being an adult is that the adult world is not nearly as hung up on the “pinch everyone who isn’t wearing green” aspect of the holiday as the elementary & middle school world is. If you typically find yourself surrounded by the “pinch everyone who isn’t wearing green” police on St. Patty’s Day, perhaps you should try drinking a green smoothie like this on the morning of St. Patrick’s Day and declare yourself pinch-proof. Or just wear green. Or find some friends who don’t pinch you. Lots of options here.

This smoothie gets its pretty green color from spinach (one of my favorite smoothie ingredients because you get all kinds of nutrition without a “green vegetable-y” taste) and matcha.  Matcha has become a slightly more familiar ingredient in recent years than it used to be, at least in the U.S.  It’s the powdered form of green tea, made by blending ground tea leaves directly into the water rather than steeping the leaves in the water and then removing them. It also comes with a nice little dose of antioxidants.

I’m a little sensitive to caffeine myself, so I only add half a teaspoon of matcha to my smoothie. If you aren’t sensitive to caffeine and would like a stronger green tea taste, go for a little more, but I’d recommend adding it in gradually. If you add too much, it’s going to taste grassy and bitter. If you aren’t used to looking for matcha at the store, you can check the tea aisle in most grocery stores, but personally I like to buy mine from a discount store like T. J. Maxx, Home Goods, or Marshall’s to get a better deal. They typically have a pantry foods aisle, and I stumble upon matcha there fairly often.

Before I share the recipe, let me just leave you with one more little note on it: Even if you usually add some kind of sweetener to your smoothies, I’d advise you to try skipping it in this recipe. Pineapple and banana are both very naturally sweet fruits, and you’ll likely find that any extra sugar in this recipe will take the sweetness overboard.

Ingredients

  • 1 banana
  • 1/2 cup frozen pineapple (about 10 chunks)
  • 1 1/2 cups packed fresh spinach
  • 1/2 tsp matcha powder
  • 1/2 tsp vanilla extract
  • 1/2 cup (or more) milk or alternative (I used a coconut-almond milk blend.)

Instructions

  1. Add all ingredients to a blender and puree until smooth, scraping down the sides with a spatula if necessary.

Recipe Notes

I'm sensitive to caffeine, so I stuck with the recommended 1/2 teaspoon of matcha listed on the packaging. If you aren't sensitive to it, you can add more for extra green tea flavor. Just add it little by little to avoid making your smoothie too bitter.
